American tennis legend, John McEnroe, has a special place in his heart for the Wimbledon Championships. Over the years during his career, he has gone on to become one of the best players that has graced the tournament. During a career spanning more than 15 years, McEnroe has won thrice at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Further, he began his career at this very tournament. Years after that experience, McEnroe remembered a special moment at Wimbledon.
The 64-year-old is active in the tennis world and often shares his opinions on trending topics in the sport. He was also the captain of Team World that clinched this year’s Laver Cup title. Here’s what he said about his Wimbledon memory.
John McEnroe reveals a turning point in his career

Recently, McEnroe was featured on the SmartLess podcast where he talked about various subjects. During that conversation, he also went on to reminisce about the importance of Wimbledon in his career.
Talking about it, he said, “I went to Wimbledon when I was 18. I was sent to play the juniors. And I broke through and qualified and made it to the semis in the main draw. And that completely changed my life. I didn’t realize you know what, Wimbledon man, except when I saw my guy you mentioned my great rival Bjorn Borg. Yeah.”

Further, McEnroe went on to add, “And I remember seeing him play a few matches when I was like, 15, before I played there, and like hundreds of girls ran on the court. And it was like, Oh, my God, this is like tennis’, version of Beatlemania , I go, I want to be a tennis player. Somehow, I gotta get some of that.” And McEnroe went on and got more than what he thought.
Earlier this year, John McEnroe was involved in a heated debate with British legends, Tim Henman and Tracy Austin. It was regarding Russian tennis sensation, Mirra Andreeva’s unfortunate incident during her match against Madison Keys.

John McEnroe’s heated argument at Wimbledon
At this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva was involved in a rather bizarre incident. She apparently threw her racket and received a point penalty for her action.
Subsequently, Austin said, “Right there, she slips. She says it was all in one motion and that she didn’t really throw her racquet…” Jumping to Andreeva’s defense, McEnroe hit back by saying, “Oh come on, give her some slack!” However, Henman grew frustrated and said, “Why are you asking me when he’s [McEnroe’s] standing right there?”

Despite this incident, John McEnroe will be proud of everything that Wimbledon has given to him. He continues to be one of the most renowned players to have played in the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, as his performances have been etched in fans’ hearts.
