In his maiden appearance at the tournament, the 20-time Grand Slam champion reached the semifinals before losing against Lleyton Hewitt, the eventual champion. Nonetheless, it was the beginning of something special as Federer went on to win 6 titles since then. Recently, he reflected on his journey of playing in Shanghai, which was the venue of the Masters Cup.

Federer visited the city during the Shanghai Masters this year. Touring the city in a non-playing capacity, many old memories came to Federer’s notice.

Earlier this week, the former World Number 1 was involved in an interview with CCTV+ where he reminisced about his Shanghai visit this year. Further, he also reflected on how times changed from his playing days at the Masters Cup in the same city.

Talking about this, Federer said, “This is a great memory, a great moment for me in my career because it was the first time I qualified to be part of the best eight in the world. Like you said, Shanghai grew so much in the years since 2002, I remember walking around in the streets seeing the modern Shanghai grow with the new buildings.”
