Andre Agassi may have collected multiple trophies and milestones, but like any other athlete, his life has had its share of ups and downs. Simply put, it’s been far from perfect. The 8-time Slam champion and former World No. 1 was dominant on the court, but the same can’t be said about his off-court journey—especially when it came to navigating his love life.

Today, fans know how deeply in love he is with his wife, longtime partner, and WTA legend Steffi Graf. But she wasn’t always in the picture. In fact, Agassi had another high-profile relationship before settling down with the 22-time major winner. He once had a short-lived marriage with a Hollywood celebrity and renowned American actress. The two even tied the knot, only to see their union unravel over time and end bitterly.

Who was Andre Agassi married to before Steffi Graf?
Andre Agassi was previously married to popular actress Brooke Shields. In the late 1990s, they were seen as a power couple. While Shields was a household name in the entertainment industry, Agassi had built an unprecedented fan following thanks to his tennis success and charismatic style, emerging as one of the most fashionable athletes on the tour. Naturally, the two grew closer over time.
Reflecting on the early days of their relationship, Shields once explained how Agassi played a key role in her personal life—particularly in helping her distance herself from her overbearing late mother, Teri, who was also her manager. “It was a transition that I needed,” she said of Agassi. “I wasn’t strong enough to separate from my mother on my own. I kept falling back in.”

In another interview with People magazine, Shields revealed how her therapist still reminds her, “I will always be thankful to Andre (Agassi) because he helped you separate from your mother lovingly.” Agassi and Shields eventually married in 1997.

How long did Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields’ marriage last?
Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t last long. By 1999, it had come to an end. The cracks, however, had already begun to show due to the stark contrast in their professional lives. Agassi was constantly traveling for ATP tournaments, while Shields was busy filming multiple projects. Initially, they ignored the warning signs.

The tension between them started surfacing even before the wedding. Speaking to People, Shields recalled Agassi’s extreme reaction to a guest appearance she made in the iconic TV series Friends in 1996. She played a character named Erika, an avid fan of Joey (played by Matt LeBlanc).
In one scene, she had to lick Joey’s hand. Agassi, however, did not take it well. “He said I made him look like a fool by licking Joey’s fingers, and he got in his car and drove all the way to Vegas. Once there, he smashed all of his tennis trophies, destroying them in a rage,” she recounted. Still, this wasn’t the incident that ultimately ended their marriage.
Why did Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields get divorced?
After they married, Shields discovered several aspects of Agassi’s personality that she hadn’t known before. Despite being together, their interaction began to fade. “It hit me all of a sudden—I knew I had made a mistake. For the next two years, we saw very little of each other. I was working on my show, Suddenly Susan, and he was playing at various tournaments,” she explained.
“He alienated me when he lost and was on to the next tournament after he won. We were drifting apart,” she added.
The real breaking point came when Shields learned about Agassi’s struggles with addiction—something he had successfully hidden from her while they were dating. “He explained to me that for the first whole part of our relationship, he had been addicted to crystal meth,” she wrote in her 2014 memoir There Was a Little Girl, as reported by Hello! magazine in March 2024.
If that revelation wasn’t difficult enough, Agassi’s refusal to seek counseling with her sealed the fate of their relationship. “I was the one who had supported him unconditionally when he told me (after we started dating) that he was basically bald and had been wearing hairpieces most of his adult life. Why would this have been any different? I would have been his biggest advocate and supporter,” Shields wrote.
After their separation, she admitted that she had never tried to reconnect. In her memoir Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, she wrote, “I’ve never reconnected with him.”
Who did Brooke Shields get married to after Andre?
Following her divorce from Agassi in 1999, Brooke Shields married writer and producer Chris Henchy in 2001. The couple went on to have two daughters, Rowan Francis Henchy (born 2003) and Grier Hammond Henchy (born 2006).
Compared with her first marriage, Shields has spoken warmly about her relationship with Henchy. “He makes me laugh,” she said. “I think I always knew that I needed solid and normal. And he’s a very, very good dad. He goes to every basketball game, every volleyball game. And the kids love being around him too.”
What does Brooke Shields do for a living?
With decades in the entertainment industry—starting as a child actress—Brooke Shields has built an impressive career and a reported net worth of $40 million, according to Parade (January 2025). She has worked extensively in both film and television, appearing on-screen, in voice roles, and as a TV producer.

She has also authored several books, including Brooke Book (1978) and On Your Own (1985). Her most recent release is Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging As a Woman (2025).
In addition, Shields launched her own hair care line, Commence, in 2024. Targeted at women over 40, the brand offers a wide range of products designed for hair health. Shields also serves as the CEO. Explaining her vision, she noted, “You have to be really clear about your vision, your mission, and you have to really be clear that you can find a way to differentiate yourself.”
