It is not what Novak Djokovic would’ve liked. Following a massively successful 2023 season that saw him win 3 major titles, the Serb has had a disappointing start to this year. In the recently concluded Australian Open, he bowed out of the tournament in the semifinal. What’s more, the prediction made by his childhood friend, Ana Ivanovic also went down the drain following his heartbreak Down Under.

Both Djokovic and Ivanovic hail from the same country, Serbia. They are one of the most popular stars in their country and share a close bond with each other. Here’s what Ivanovic said about Djokovic days before his match against the eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

Ivanovic said, “I can imagine that he’s going for Golden Slam, uh this year with Olympic year, he probably wants to try to go for grand slams and Olympic medal.” Djokovic’s performance in the first Grand Slam of the year was unexpected, and some might think that his childhood friend’s confident remark jinxed it.

But then, Ivanovic didn’t just state her prediction, she also talked about the reason behind it. And it is safe to say that, even though her prediction has ultimately been wrong, the things that she said about Djokovic and his mindset are very true.

Ivanovic went on to add, “I think Olympic medal is the only thing he’s still missing that he’s probably um is driven to achieve and to win I guess um but also maybe he just wants to get more and more Grand Slam so people can reach him harder in the future if there is someone who comes up.”

At the Olympic Games, Djokovic managed to win just a solitary bronze medal. He did so in 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Games. Despite the early setback, the Serb is determined to add the missing piece to his trophy cabinet.

Djokovic sounds positive about his Olympic chances

Following a successful 2023 season, the Serb is determined to achieve success at the Paris Olympic Games. During an interview last year, he opened up about his chances on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Djokovic said, “A lot of things are different at the Olympics – you can’t bring your whole team, some of the routines you usually have are limited, there are a lot of athletes from other sports, which gives you the energy on one hand, but it drains you on the other… All those things you mentioned – I want it all, why not, and we’ll see where it ends.”

This motivated me to complete an Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management while pursuing my career as a sports writer.
