Michael Jordan retired for the 2nd time just after winning the three-peat with Chicago Bulls in 1998. He had an insane season with the Bulls and was the best player in the NBA. Any other player would have decided to stay and win a couple of more rings. However, Jordan retired, despite spending just 12 seasons in the NBA. Many feel Jordan had this risk of returning the next season as a lesser version of himself.

His Airness was just unstoppable at his peak. He dominated the NBA during the 90s and won the championship in every season he played during that decade. This just goes on to show how insanely good he was. The Bulls had Pippen, Rodman, among other star players alongside Jordan, who helped. But they failed to win a championship in his absence when he retired for the first time in 1993.

Wright reported: “He has kept this fact a secret from most people. A fatalist obsession didn’t go with his public image and, well, it’s sort of strange. His mother would get angry with him when he’d talk to her about it. He just could never imagine being old. He seemed too powerful, too young, and death was more likely than a slow decline. The universe might take him, but it would not permit him to suffer the graceless loss and failure of aging. A tragic flaw could undo him but never anything as common as bad knees or failing eyesight.”

Jordan’s last season with the Bulls was a broadcasting success. The 1998 NBA Finals had the highest TV rating than any other NBA Finals in the NBA history. In fact, the sixth game had the highest TV ratings of any game in history. Jordan retired with a record of six Finals MVP awards.

MJ did retire as the best player in the NBA. Not many players would have done that at that stage in their career. Jordan is different, and that’s what separates him from the rest.
