Every lifter tends to have a different opinion on the fact whether to include a bench press in their workout regime or not. Joining the debate is a fitness influencer and model Jay Vincent, who recently posted a YouTube short on the same topic.

According to many bodybuilding veterans and influencers, there are other much better and safer exercises to train and grow chest size. Vincent started by revealing that the “bench press is not a good chest exercise.” “The primary function of your pecs is adduction. Bring your arm from outside, to in. If you were doing a bench press, you’re not getting any adduction at all. It just doesn’t optimally contract and load the chest muscles,” said Vincent.

During the golden era of bodybuilding, which is generally considered to be the 1960s and 70s, the bench press held significant importance in the training routines of many bodybuilders. Golden-era bodybuilders sculpted awe-inspiring physiques that are still revered today. The bench press is often used to measure the strength of lifters and bodybuilders. Bodybuilding veterans were famous for lifting extremely heavy on the bench. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu had an astounding bench press record of 525lbs whereas Dorian Yates used to bench 425lbs for 8 reps.
Despite this, many recent bodybuilders have stated that they prefer dumbbell workouts over bench press, due to the injuries linked with the movement. 4X Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler is one of the big names who preferred not benching.
