Chris Bumstead Reveals His Definition of Championship Mentality: “Unwavering Confidence Is a Lie”

Chris Bumstead has been a winner for the last five years, yet the bodybuilder has had several instances where his physical and mental capacities were not the best to cope with competitions. Many might think that it is the champion’s mentality that kicks in during these periods, helping Bumstead attain success. However, the five-time Classic Physique has a different notion of a champion’s mentality.

Bumstead talked about how confidence and strong mental will are the only supplements to winning a game. However, the bodybuilder confessed that over time, his idea of a champion’s mentality changed a lot. CBum spoke about unwavering confidence and how it does not fit in his definition.

In his latest Instagram video, Chris Bumstead talked about his journey and training. Bumstead began with the confession that he had changed his “definition of champion mentality” almost 100 times. Elaborating on this, he explained what it means to him at present. “Unwavering confidence is a lie..” the bodybuilder stated, proceeding to say that fears would never fade away, “The fears never go away completely. They just don’t linger as long,” he explained.

“Champion Mentality is not about the trophy, it’s about having no quit. It’s about doing everything possible within your power to achieve your goals,” Bumstead revealed. He also pointed out that whether one wins or loses, they should always keep their heads high because they know they have put in all the effort they could put in.

As such statements showcase, one thing that is more constant about Bumstead than his trophies is his mentality. Let us look at how Bumstead’s champion mentality helped him during his 5th Mr. Olympia win.

Explaining how he was trying to win the mental game to win Mr. Olympia physically, but also did not want to compromise with who he really was, he said, “I always understood it would be a mental game to stay at the top and I was willing to do almost anything to be mentally strong enough. But I was not willing to sacrifice who I was to win.”

He revealed that he loved the trophy, but there were things way beyond the title itself. He said, “I am hell a lot more proud of who I was to win it. Who I became in the process of winning it.” Then the bodybuilder explained what he believed true champion mentality was when he had just won his 5th Mr. Olympia, “Champion mentality is the endless pursuit of being the best man I can be, regardless of if this trophy comes home with.”
