The bodybuilding scene earned its reputation in the 1970s when legendary bodybuilders like Frank Zane, Lou Ferrigno, and Arnold Schwarzenegger dominated the Mr. Olympia stage. Their physique and posing routines represented the sport to larger masses. Even though the training regimen has evolved over the years, bodybuilding icons of the current era still follow their posing routines.

But the IFBB Pro turned elite bodybuilding coach opened up about his distaste for a famous pose aced by the Austrian Oak and the Chemist during their prime.

Milos Sarcev opens up about vacuum pose

Apart from training hard in the gym and following a strict diet, bodybuilders need to ace their posing routine to display their strengths while underplaying their weaknesses. Because in the end, an iconic posing routine will only display the bodybuilder’s physique to the judges and crowd. 

Schwarzenegger and Zane’s vacuum pose is still revered by their fans. However, the Serbian bodybuilding veteran revealed that he isn’t a great fan of the pose. “In my opinion, I hate the goddamn vacuum,” Sarcev confessed in The Menace Podcast with Dennis James on the Muscle and Fitness channel.

But he immediately added, “I mean Arnold did it, and for Arnold it is perfect, I must say, Frank Zane, abs shot, it’s wonderful, but I don’t call that the ab shot.” He also noted that he didn’t like Big Ramy doing an “open lat spread” coupled with a vacuum pose. However, no one can deny that Arnie and Zane perfected their posing routine that fetched them the Mr. Olympia titles.

The legacy of the Golden Era of bodybuilding

The 1970s is considered the golden era of bodybuilding. The Mr. Olympia event was first held in 1965, and Schwarzenegger competed in his first event in 1969. Soon, he dominated the stage of Mr. Olympia with six titles till 1975, before his retirement. To the unversed, Arnie won his last Mr. Olympia title in 1980 after he made a sudden appearance on the Mr. Olympia stage. Frank Zane subsequently won three Sandow trophies.

The interesting factor of the Golden phase is the conditioning of bodybuilders. However, the aesthetics of the sport soon succumbed to mass as the Mass Monster phase was kickstarted in the 1990s and now dominates the bodybuilding scene. But still, certain aspects of the golden era are filtered to the mass monster era.

The present bodybuilding arena is experiencing cutthroat competition, unlike the golden era. But that doesn’t take away the glory of one of the most prominent periods in the history of the sport.
