In 2004, the 49-year-old actor, known for his strikingly thin frame, took on the iconic role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. However, Christopher Nolan, the film’s director, candidly admitted that he faced a dilemma when considering Bale for the role due to his physical appearance.

For the role in ‘The Machinist’, Bale reduced his weight to 110 pounds to do justice to the script that described his character as “a walking skeleton.” However, his unparalleled physical transformation set in when he had to take up the ripped Batman role in his next film. The maker of superhero films, Christopher Nolan, was unsure about Bale as Batman.
Nolan once revealed his impression of Bale and said, “When I first met Christian, he was extraordinarily thin, having lost an enormous amount of weight for The Machinist.”

Bale also confirmed Nolan’s apprehensions and said, “He did call me and say, Well, you know how do you look right now, like, how am I going to seriously be able to suggest to Warner Brothers that you could play Batman ever?” But Bale proved everyone wrong with determination as he built a 220-pound, toned physique for his first-ever Batman movie. The Oscar-winning actor also confessed that he put a full stop to his transformations earlier in 2019.

To suit the needs of the roles he played, Christian Bale went to extremes in terms of body transformation. However, his older self is against his adventures with health. So, he quit his “extreme bodyweight rollercoaster” and confirmed the same in 2019.

He admitted to Sunday Times Culture that he can’t pursue any rapid body transformation roles in the future: “I can’t keep doing it. I really can’t,” and added, “My mortality is staring me in the face.”
