Injuries are a part of all sports either during training or playing on the field. However, bodybuilding athletes go through a lot more physical damage due to high-intensity training. While mostly these injuries can be muscle or ligament pulls that heal fast, at times they can end careers. There are many instances of veteran Olympia winners, like Frank Zane and Ronnie Coleman, who had to close the door to their bodybuilding career due to injury. Six times, Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates faced something similar to this as well.
Dorian Yates decided to take up stem cell treatment like his colleague Coleman. He decided to take the treatment from Colombia and traveled all the way there. Dorian Yates has undergone treatment in Medellín and recently shared his update with the fans.

According to Yates, the one-month mark showed a little improvement: “So after one month I estimated my hip pain discomfort and lack of mobility to improve by 20%.” ‘The Shadow’ further explained the progress after three months of treatment and said, “Now we are at the three-month mark. I would say it’s around maybe 40%.” He had pain in his shoulders and knees as well, but the main goal was always the hips which have finally started the road to recovery.
Yates also added that he feels better and said, “Just feel good, general sense of well-being and everything.” This is good news since Dorian wanted to avoid surgery, and have pain-free movement. Despite this hip injury, Yates continued to compete from 1994 to 1996, but he retired in 1997. Despite that, the 61-year-old does not stop working out while also getting treatment.

In the past, before he got surgery but had the pain, Yates was still competing, so he had to exercise. Instead of doing barbell squats that would hurt his hip more, he replaced it with Smith machine squat. “To replace barbell squats, I alternated between leg presses and Smith machine squats. I found a solution that worked for me and enabled me to build my legs without interfering with my injury,” wrote Yates.
He also realized the benefits of the Smith machine and decrease his back involvement. He said in a previous post, “I found that with the Smith machine, I could position my feet closer together and slightly forward to minimize any back involvement.”

Barbell squats do not help with this and might cause injury. So Dorian never backed down from any challenge, even when it was a physical ailment. He still works out and does pilates and yoga at the age of 61 while also going through stem cell treatment. What do you think of his tenacity? Tell us in the comments.
