Greg had a succinct answer to this question, and he explained it scientifically. First Doucette broke down what VO2 means: “VO2 max is the most amount of oxygen that your body can use while sprinting or doing cardio.” He also explained that V is volume and O2 is oxygen, so the maximum volume of oxygen a body can intake during exercise is the main crux of the matter.

“So, the higher that is, the faster you can go for longer, and how to go about setting up a program to increase your VO2 max, basically depends on what is your current fitness level,” he added. If someone is not a regular gym goer, they can also increase their VO2 max by brisk walking. One can increase their VO2 max by getting a harder warmup and getting interval training. This should be done at a rate of VO2 max that is higher than one’s anaerobic threshold. Doucette explained that the BPM, or heartbeats per minute, must increase to increase oxygen volume by taking intervals in between. Even legendry Dorian Yates increased his VO2 max, and he mentioned that is the reason his biological age is between 30 to 39.

“Looks like my HIIT 8-minute 2 x weekly cardio sessions paid off,” added the 6-time Mr. Olympia winner. The results of the fitness test showed progress, and Yates said, “Comparison of the maximum VO2 achieved with the values of the American population places the patient between the 90-100 percentiles (excellent aerobic capacity).” These results show that his fitness level is equivalent to that of someone who is 30 years old. Yates might not train today like a bodybuilder, but he is fitter than most youngsters.
