In the pursuit of physical excellence, the age-old adage of “more is better” often reigns supreme in the minds of many. Yet, according to the legendary mass monster Dorian Yates, this mantra couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to sculpting a physique that commands attention.

Yates shared a snippet of his interview on Instagram, where he recalled what Mike Mentzer used to say. He wisely noted that the human inclination to equate abundance with superiority extends beyond reason. “More is not better. Better is better,” Yates echoes, challenging the conventional wisdom that increasing volume equates to greater gains.

The six-time Mr. Olympia advocates the prioritization of intensity over sheer volume. “I understand it more is better but it’s not in this case yeah more intensity is better not more volume more intensity,” stated The Shadow. According to him, intensity is the catalyst for transformation, propelling individuals toward their fitness goals with unwavering focus and determination.

According to what Yates wrote in the caption of his post, it’s not about mindlessly piling on sets and reps, but channeling maximum effort into every moment of your training. Yates shares his insight, revealing that sustained peak intensity is an elusive feat, akin to sprinting at full throttle until exhaustion inevitably sets in.

Drawing parallels to Mentzer’s analogy, Yates underscores the fleeting nature of peak performance. “If you go outside and sprint with maximum effort, how long before it turns into a semi-jog?” he asks, highlighting the inevitable decline in intensity over prolonged durations. He also recommended a strategic approach, instead of going blindly for any movement.

Dorian Yates asks individuals to bank on short, intense workout sessions

“So if volume was the key factor, why wouldn’t we continually increase our amount of volume? Why not do 50 sets or 100 sets?” he challenges, urging individuals to reassess their priorities. Yates’ methodology lies in the relentless pursuit of intensity.
