“Never in Your Worst Nightmares”: Fitness World Horror-Stricken After an Innocent Man Left Paralyzed in an Unexpected Gym Accident

A gym is a place that requires the utmost attention and care from the lifter’s side. While it is the responsibility of the gym staff and authorities to install and maintain properly functioning equipment, a gym-goer shall also pay attention to such things closely to avoid unwanted troubles. The fitness and bodybuilding community has gone through a lot of tragedies recently, including the death of an Indonesian bodybuilder who died while squatting.

Recently, another horrifying news made the headlines as a 42-year-old man suffered an injury to his neck that left him paralyzed with less than a 1% chance of ever walking again. The man named Regilaneo da Silva underwent immediate surgery as a consequence. The dreadful incident has left the fitness community in a sorrowful state, as it places a serious question on the safety measures of fitness centers and gyms around us. 

Doctors give their insights on da Silva’s situation

The incident took place in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceara. The Brazilian man was doing machine squats. While resting in between the sets, he sat on the platform when the lever holding 330 lbs collapsed on his neck. After the incident, three men rushed in order to save da Silva and he was taken to Santo Antonio Hospital for an emergency surgery.

Da Silva’s surgery cost around $7,000 which the gym and his family bore. According to the Brazilian News Outlet G1, Dr. Jose revealed that there is a very slim chance that he will ever walk again.

“There are neither motor nor sensitive components, unfortunately. It is the most serious injury there is from the point of view of neurological damage. The chance is, statistically, less than 1% of the return of motor or sensitive functions,” Dr. Jose stated. The bodybuilding community has been left in shatters and shared their thoughts on this gruesome incident.

One of the users expressed his disbelief over the situation by stating, “Damn man for me the gym is my safe place. To see this happen is sad.” Another comment from a worried user read, “Absolutely horrible. You never in your worst nightmares envision a debilitating or fatal injury at the gym.” A person also wrote, “Let’s be real carefull guys, we don’t come for that… stay safe.”

Analyzing the situation, a user suspected, “The gym published a note saying the equipment was brand new. I guess he didnt lock the safe properly.” Another person wished him a speedy recovery and wrote, “I hate seeing gym accidents man. Just fking horrible. I really hope he can walk again.”
