It’s a misconception largely accepted by people that the more you grind, the better your physique gets irrespective of one’s physical condition or age. Frank Zane gives disclaimer against building bigger pecs in old age

The bodybuilder who once defeated Arnold Schwarzenegger has his own mantra to incorporate fitness for an aging body. Recently, Zane talked about the importance of having diversity in one’s workouts. He talked about how building pecs was not necessarily a mandatory outcome of fitness. He stated, “It’s a good idea not to get your pecs too big, especially lower pecs.”

The bodybuilder then explained that one should not increase their bench presses as they grow older, because that would, in turn, build bigger pecs. He commented, “It’s not about how much you can bench press as you get older. Bench press is good for building pec, delt, triceps mass in the early stages of one’s development but its usefulness doesn’t last.”

On the other hand, the bodybuilder has a whole fitness technique that he advises for as one gets older.

Frank Zane’s Mantra for aging gracefully

According to Zane’s point of view working out less frequently will give ample resting time to one’s body. He talked about how a faster metabolism would signify a quicker resting period. However, as you grow older, metabolism also slows down, and hence the requirement of rest also increases. He also stated, “The older you get, the less frequently you should train — especially if you want to train hard each workout.”
