Originally born in a small village in Austria, seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger saw tough times as he was born a short while after World War 2. He decided really early in his life that he wanted to move out of Austria as soon as possible and wanted to settle in the United States. However, when the bodybuilding veteran first stepped on American soil, firstly, he realized that the image he had of America in his mind was a lie. Secondly, he faced a ton of difficulties adapting to the country’s standards, as well as due to his thick accent.

Even though learning a new language can be challenging, Arnold overcame this obstacle. However, it was his thick accent that became a bit problematic for some people to understand. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a friend go to a Hungarian restaurant and The Austrian Oak gets into trouble because of his accent

As his book, ‘Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,’ is about to come out in a few days, Arnold has been really busy promoting it for the past few weeks. As he recently sat with Kelly Clarkson for an episode of the renowned talk show ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show,’ amidst many other things, he revealed that he once got misunderstood because of his Austrian accent. As Schwarzenegger and his friend visited a Hungarian restaurant to have a meal, Schwarzenegger asked for some more cabbage. However, lost in translation, the owner of the restaurant did not understand what Schwarzenegger said.

“So he took us there, and I ate this unbelievable, you know, vegetables and meat and everything like that. And then I said to the guy, the owner…Yeah, can I have some more of your garbage?” Schwarzenegger disclosed. Hearing this, the restaurant owner was shocked and asked Arnie, “What Did You Call My Food?” Luckily, this was when Arnold’s friend jumped in and clarified, “No, no, no, what he actually meant was cabbage; he wants to have some more of your cabbage.”

While this was one of the difficulties that Schwarzenegger faced when he first came to America, the main setback for Arnold was when he realized that the image that he had of America in his mind was a lie.

Disappointed Schwarzenegger steps on American soil

Due to the media portrayal and limited exposure to the world, Schwarzenegger believed that the bodybuilding industry in America was filled with luxury cars, money, and beach models. However, he soon realized that it was all a lie. He understood that a jacked physique does not necessarily mean sports cars and bikini models as portrayed in movies.

A while back, during an event at the Academy Museum, ‘Arnie’ opened up about this and admitted, “What I read in the magazines that it’s huge, guys getting into movies with bodybuilding, become businessman, successful, and making millions of dollars, none of it was really true.”
