The veteran’s dad further mouthed his disbelief, “So I don’t know how you’re going to do it.” Cooper, however, destroyed all apprehensions by bulking up. He gained 44 pounds for the role by following a disciplined high-calorie diet.

Jason Walsh, Cooper’s trainer for the role, revealed that the actor consumed liquid calories to put on pounds. The reason behind it being they are easily consumable and digestible. The calorie uptake of Cooper increased week after week, starting from 2000 to a whopping 4500.

The actor also trained as religiously as he could. Cooper dedicated more focus to the elevated trap bar deadlift exercise. His strenuous efforts paid off as he achieved a physique similar to Kyle’s. As a result, he successfully portrayed the role of the war veteran, earning him a nomination for the Academy Award.
