The world of boxing was left divided and in a state of controversy as Devin Haney retained his undisputed lightweight champion status with a disputed unanimous decision victory over Vasyl Lomachenko. Oscar De La Hoya expresses dissatisfaction with Devin Haney’s controversial win

The former six-division champion took to Twitter declaring that anyone who believed Lomachenko didn’t win did not understand the sport. The tweet perfectly showcased his dissatisfaction with the scorecard which many felt went in favor of the undisputed champion. “Whoever thinks Loma didn’t win does not know sh*t about boxing,” he wrote.

 

Devin Haney’s controversial victory over Vasyl Lomachenko has ignited a fierce debate within the boxing community. Moreover, the dissenting voices, including Shakur Stevenson who also thought ‘Loma’ had won, highlight the subjectivity of scoring and the inherent controversy that can arise from it. Vasyl Lomachenko’s manager will appeal the controversial decision

The Ukrainian’s manager, Egis Klimas, has declared their intention to appeal the decision immediately after the bout. In a post-fight interview, Klimas expressed frustration and a commitment to seeking justice, stating that somebody needs to review this decision. “We’re not gonna let it go, I guarantee we’re gonna protest, we’re gonna appeal. Somebody needs to end this injustice,” he said.

While the outcome of the appeal remains uncertain, the determination of Lomachenko’s team to challenge the decision sends a powerful message about their commitment to fairness and justice in boxing. Moreover, in a sport that has been under fire for losing its credibility when it comes to scoring, this is a step in the right direction. However, it is highly unlikely that this decision will be overruled.
