In an interview with FightHype.com the former champion acknowledged the talent and determination of Spence Jr. He also revealed that ‘The Truth’ was his training partner during his preparation for a fight against Robert Guerrero. Moreover, ‘Money’ claimed that Spence put in a great sparring session worthy of Mayweather’s praise.
“Errol Spence maybe he’s a hell of a fighter. Now, one thing about me, I’m always gonna give it to you 100%. You know, in training camp when I was training for my fight before Guerrero, Errol Spence gave me solid work. He’s a very, very young tough competitor. So if I sit right here and not give that young kid props, you know, it’d be bad,” he said.
Mayweather’s candid admission of Spence Jr.’s prowess demonstrates the respect he held for the young fighter, despite the significant experience gap between them. This was not all, as ‘TBE’ revealed that Spence was the only fighter who pushed him to the limit.
Mayweather details Spence Jr’s impact on his training
The 46-year-old added that during their sparring sessions, Spence would push him to the limit, challenging the boxing icon in ways he hadn’t experienced in years. However, Mayweather welcomed the opportunity to test his skills against a formidable opponent despite taking a year off.
“Afer doing my time, I was being off a year. I came back, you know, I came back. He’s one of the guys that pushed me to the limit. He made me work in a boxing gym, and you know, I like young guys like that that’s in the sport, that’s going to push me to the limit and make me work. And Errol Spence pushed me to the limit also.” he said
