Before her trial, Griner even wrote a letter to U.S. president Joe Biden asking him to demand her release. The Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced that the U.S. had proposed trading an imprisoned Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout, for the release of Griner and Paul Whelan, another U.S. prisoner in Russia. However, this is still not confirmed as the negotiations are ongoing.
