The internet has made it possible to give a new lease on life to matters considered dead a long way back. Perhaps, the age-old proverb – sweeping under the rug might go extinct the way things are going.

Pegasus Motions pictures released IP Man 3 in December 2015. Directed by Wilson Yip, the movie is the third installment of the IP Man franchise. Hong Kong-based Kung Fu star Donnie Yen played the role of legendary Wing Chun guru Ip Man. Former world champion Mike Tyson played the role of Frank, an expert boxer and real estate developer from the United States with ties to the Triads. A couple of months before the release, reports on Iron Mike breaking his finger came around. Given that the enactors involved in the movie are globally known combat sports practitioners, it was only a matter of time before Tyson’s finger fracture became a subject of a heated debate.

When Mike Tyson broke his fingers

While filming a fight scene in Shanghai, Yen’s elbow injured one of Tyson’s fingers. Tyson saw a doctor post-completion of the shot. Later, the doctors confirmed that Tyson had fractured his finger. Donnie Yen is a famous actor who is also skilled in Kung Fu. In contrast, Mike Tyson is a boxer par excellence with limited forays into motion pictures.

Is it much ado about nothing?

One user couldn’t help but call a spade a spade to throw the light on the debate’s direction – who is better? Just because Tyson broke his finger, does that make Donnie better? He added that in a real-life scenario, the situation could be otherwise.

Another user briefly dissected the situation, highlighting the risk involved while practicing moves with an expert martial artist.

It was nothing but a marketing gimmick, and it never happened! exclaimed another user.

While pointing out the frequent injuries that happen while shooting martial art sequences, a few users also hoped for more care while handling the fight choreography.

Finally, taking the bull by its horns, a user appealed to some sense, given that injuries are part and parcel of martial movie shooting, and said, …As mush as I like Donnie Yen, cut the b******t, he is a film star not a fighter.”

Reportedly, after watching the first ‘Ip Man,’ Tyson became Donnie Yen’s biggest fan. So when approached to star in the third edition of the series, Tyson said yes.
