The world of boxing lost one of its most esteemed gems, Mills Lane. The infamous referee passed away last year in December. He kept the sport of boxing and ethics always in place. A former district attorney and judge, he had overseen over 100 championship bouts in the course of his career. His catchphrase, “Let’s get it on,” still echoes in boxing arenas that once were his place of conduct.

Lane has led many fights into the ring that went on to make history in boxing circles. He, an amateur and pro-boxing veteran, also oversaw bouts between many of boxing’s elite, including Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Roberto Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Thomas Hearns.

His most spoken-about incident in the boxing ring dates back to 1997, the iconic rematch between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. The scathing battle between the two scorned rivals took an unusual turn. ‘Iron Mike’ was offended at being headbutted by Holyfield in the second round.  A furious Mike further bit off a part of his opponent’s right ear and spit it out on the mat.

Standing firm on his integrity and resolute, Mills Lane disqualified Mike. He announced, “He bit him!”  Years later, the Heavyweight boxer’s picture with the legendary referee has made fans reminisce about the old times.

Mike Tyson adored Mills Lane

A picture dating back almost 10 years has resurfaced on the internet. Mike Tyson can be seen giving a wheelchair-ridden, Mills Lane an endearing hug. The hug is indeed symbolic of what the sport of boxing stands for. A systematic sport where there is camaraderie between stakeholders despite sometimes going against each other. But only, for the sake of upholding the integrity of the sport.

It seems like a full-circle moment for both Lee and Tyson after the referee disqualified Tyson in 1997.  Steve Knapik remembered the history between the two. The user commented, “Beautiful, they had a long history together”

Lynn Howard Firth remembered the iconic catchphrase used by Mills. The user said, “Let’s get it on” .. Always felt better when Mills was holding court ..miss him”

It is quite disappointing when legends who contributed heavily to a sport do not get the respect they deserve. Mills too went undeniably unnoticed in the wake of his passing. Tex Johnson said, “I didnt know mills kassed [passed]  away . I have alof off respect [a lot of respect] for that man . Great ref . Sometimes he kept me entertained more than the bloody fights .”

Sergio Ventura rightly points out the sportsmanship and the grace Mike has shown throughout his career. The user said, “The champion is humble. And noble. And that’s what it has. Lots of value greetings”

Quin Martin just adores the iconic moment in boxing history. He says, That’s priceless.”

Rarely do we see an official reach such fame in boxing. Mills Lane further made sure his name was etched in golden letters in boxing history. Boxing is not always about trash-talking and intense rivalry but is also about respect and integrity. Both are splendid examples of this camaraderie.
