After 12 years since he last fought in Mexico, Canelo Alvarez is back in his hometown. On the 6th of May, with his current undisputed status on the line, Alvarez will square off against John Ryder, the current WBO interim super middleweight champion. Ahead of the bout against Ryder, Alvarez spoke about his potential retirement from the sport given Ryder beats him on the 6th of May.

In his recent interview with Chris Mannix from DAZN Boxing, the ‘Mexican Phenom’ spoke about being “excited to fight here in my hometown [Guadalajara]” and making history. Alvarez, who is happy with the response of his people, feels he is motivated and ready. It has been almost two decades since the 32-year-old made his pro debut and became one of the pound-for-pound greats. Speaking about whether or not he was on the decline, Alvarez stated he would retire from the sport if Ryder won the fight.

Alvarez heartily appreciated the support and response he received from the people in his hometown. In addition, speaking of the surgery he had on his hand last fall, he assured being at his “hundred percent“. However, as Mannix asked whether or not this was Alvarez’s last fight in the pro ring, the Mexican boxer said, “Look, if John Ryder beats me, I’m done.” Anyway, expecting only the positive, Canelo immediately assured that he would continue for a long time.

“But, it’s not my last fight. I’m gonna continue in boxing for a long time,” Alvarez further stated. In addition, he commented on the view that claimed him to be on the decline. “Yeah, I’m in my best. And, I’m the best fighter. I lose with one of the best fighters in 175. I like challenge,” Alvarez declared.
