“It Would Be a Tragedy for the Kids to Lose Hope”: Sentenced to 90 Days of Home Detention and 3 Years of Probation After Avoiding Jail Time, Gervonta Davis Receives Support From Former Champion and Boxing World

Gervonta Davis is one the biggest names of the sport and some might argue the face of boxing. Just last month, he defeated Ryan Garcia in a spectacular showdown. Though, off the court, the boxer is pleading his case in courtrooms for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run case back in November 2020. In March of 2021, the boxer was charged with 14 counts of traffic violations and he plead guilty to four counts in February of this year.
Now, he has been sentenced to a punishment of 90 days of home detention, 3 years of probation, and 200 hours of community service. In light of the recent court ruling, the boxing world and a former champion cut no corners to give their verdict on Davis’ current predicament.
How did the boxing world react to the sentence of Gervonta Davis?

A former world champion, Yordenis Ugás publicly supported the court’s sentencing on the Baltimore boxer. Ugás is a Cuban boxer and a former WBA welterweight champion. He believes that given how big of a star Davis is; the sport would benefit from him not going to prison.
He stated, “It is healthy for our sport. That the fighter that many call “the face of boxing “will have a second chance and will not go to prison. It only remains now for the champ to learn from this lesson.”

One fan hopes that Davis considers it a learning experience and does not repeat his mistakes. However, he considers Canelo Alvarez to be the face of boxing. He stated, “Champ let’s hope Tank stays away from trouble. If he can stay active and win true legit titles, he can make a case for himself. For now, Canelo is and remains The Face of Boxing until he retires.”
