‘J Balvin Was the One Who Led Me to the Psychologist’: Canelo Alvarez Opens Up About Seeking Mental Health Help Following Dmitry Bivol Loss

There is no denying that the sport of boxing puts boxers’ bodies under extreme physical stress. However, a factor that is often overlooked is the mental well-being of boxers. A lot of fighters have spoken about the mental stress that the sport puts them through, and the steps they took to overcome the same. In fact, pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez recently opened up about seeing a psychologist after his fight.

Alvarez was in an interview with Adela Micha of La Saga. In conversation, Micha asked him if he sought any psychological support after his fight. Notably, she might have been referring to his light-heavyweight showdown against Dmitry Bivol, where he fought with a hand injury. In response, Alvarez said, “The first time in my life that I needed a psychologist. It was for this fight. The first time I felt like talking to some expert. That is to say, I mean, I was fine, I was calm.”

Alvarez further mentioned that he wished to unburden his mind, saying, “I felt I want to talk, tell me what I was doing wrong. And tell me what I was doing right. I spoke and it helped me very much. My brother J Balvin was the one who led me to the psychologist. “

He was referring to Colombian singer J Balvin who had personally taken him to meet an expert.

Canelo Alvarez never felt prejudiced for seeking psychological help

It is often seen that a lot of people are divided at the thought of seeking professional help for their mental well-being. However, it seems like Canelo Alvarez had no qualms about the same.

In the same interview, Micha further asked him if he felt prejudiced for seeking help. Alvarez responded by saying, “No, no, it was not necessary, But no prejudices at all. You seek help because you are going to let yourself be helped.
