In 2007 Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya faced off for the WBC junior middleweight title, with Money securing the victory via split decision. The fight marked the beginning of a long-standing rivalry between both men even after the pair retired from the sport.

The rivalry between them continued after they started their own separate promotions, and have been taking shots at each other for the better part of a decade. And now it looks like Mayweather promotions’ CEO Leonard Ellerbe has accused Golden Boy of forcing Mayweather to compete at 150 pounds.

Leonard Ellerbe accuses De La Hoya

Ellerbe took to Twitter to address De La Hoya’s stating that Gervonta Davis should take on Garcia at 140-pounds. Ellerbe gave the example of De La Hoya’s fight with Money and stated that he was the one who ‘dwarfed’ the competition and gave Mayweather an ultimatum for the fight. However, he added that it was the people behind the scenes who helped in eventually making the fight happen.

Funny how some have amnesia, in 07 Floyd got a take it or leave it to offer, Oscar was the guy who was dwarfing the comp as it related to generating revenue, you see the rules changed only because of the people involved. Can’t really say what I want to but….” He wrote replying to a fan who claimed that fighters were chasing Mayweather when he was at the top.

It seems Ellerbe might have some inside information about the Golden Boy and Money’s fight back in 2007 who helped in setting the rules for this fight. However, he is reluctant to fully reveal the details.

Floyd Mayweather vs Oscar De La Hoya

On May 5, 2007, Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya stepped into the ring to battle each other. The fight was promoted as the “World Awaits” and was the biggest fight in boxing in almost a decade. Despite being inactive for almost 20 months before the fight, De La Hoya was still the biggest star in boxing.

Mayweather, on the other hand, was the rising star in boxing, already holding titles in 4-weight divisions and was the much smaller man coming into the fight. However, he managed to beat De La Hoya via a split decision and cement himself as one of the best boxers in the world.
