Oscar De La Hoya is curious and he knows something. The American promoter has been taking a dig at the PBC and trying to unearth what happened to PBC-Amazon’s first PPV event, headlined by Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora. He seems to see signs of trouble and wants Amazon to tread carefully. What did he say to the American giant?

On March 30, the PBC put on their first PPV of the year with Amazon, with a star-studded lineup of Isaac Cruz and Rolando Romero. But it has been over two weeks, and we haven’t heard how the event performed financially. De La Hoya grips with the same curiosity. While he wants Amazon to rack up success, he doesn’t have faith in the PBC. After all, according to him, the PBC has a long, troubled pattern of putting its PPV partners out of business.

The 51-year-old promoter turned to his X handle and wrote, “I’m rooting for @amazon to succeed but they got with a promoter that took Showtime, NBC, Fox etc. out of the boxing business. #FACT”

Notably, Al Haymon‘s PBC last partnered with Showtime Boxing before they shut down their operations, and NBC and Fox too have had a similar fate. Some continue to blast PBC’s tendency to make matches within its stable and its hesitancy to join hands with other promoters. Moreover, the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford have had troubles with the PBC very recently. But PBC’s troubles don’t end there.

Boxing insider Rick Glaser declared that the PBC’s first PPV on Amazon “tanked.” He theorized that the low numbers were so low that those were an “embarrassment.” While he puts the PPV numbers at 50,000, Eddie Hearn has speculated that the event fell short of even the 20,000 PPV mark.

These numbers should worry Amazon, as they have inked a multi-year deal with the PBC. Meanwhile, De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has been labeled a well-run company. But how are they doing it? Glaser explains.

Golden Boy Promotions: A well-oiled machinery?

Glaser wrote on his X handle a few weeks ago, “Lets do alittle math, in the first 4 months of the year, #PBC will have one show, #TszyuThurman March 30, & #GoldenBoy will have 8 shows in that same time period.Contrary to what some want to believe, #GBP is a very well run company. By the way, I used simple math so more people would understand.”

De La Hoya’s GBP hosted their first show headlined by John Ryder and Jaime Munguia in January. They are already working on Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia, which might pull good PPV numbers. However, their ticket sales have taken a hit because of steep prices. In addition, he has Alvarez fighting Munguia during the Cinco de Mayo weekend, a venture coincidentally in partnership with the PBC, which is also supposed to do well financially. So, it seems, that the PBC and GBP have contrasting fortunes.
