Ace promoter Eddie Hearn has come out to defend Devin Haney. Why would he not? Hearn was the promoter who took a chance on Haney and he is still being rewarded for taking the risk. However, Haney has also received his share of criticism for supposedly not being able to sell his fights. Disapproving of such criticism is Hearn. Recently, the promoter took a dig at Haney’s counterparts, Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez, to provide a comparative study between Haney and the two fighters.

Devin Haney is all set to enter the ring against Regis Prograis over the weekend. He noted that the winner of the fight would become the “big name.” To back his declaration, the promoter took shots at Stevenson and Lopez, giving them a harsh reality check.

Eddie Hearn takes a dig at Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez

In a conversation with Fight Hub TV, Hearn criticized both ‘Sugar’ and Lopez for dodging the Haney fight. They had earlier cited that the fighter does not sell well. He noted, “You show me, you talk about Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez, they can’t sell 3000-4000… I don’t know what Shakur sold in Las Vegas… Less than 2000. He’s an amazing fighter, but the excuse used to be about Devin Haney. “Oh, he just doesn’t sell.”  What happens when he goes to a new city that doesn’t even host boxing? And sell 16,000.” It was reported that for his fight against Regis Prograis, the venue has been overwhelmingly sold out.

That’s about Shakur. But what did Hearn have to say about Lopez? He elucidated how for his big unification fight against Josh Taylor (2023) the venue was hardly sold out. He said, “People like Teofimo Lopez, I’ve done a fight with Teofimo Lopez; the undisputed lightweight world championship. We just sold out the theatre. And when he boxed Josh Taylor for the unified championship at 140, they couldn’t even sell out the theatre. And that’s a massive fight.”

Hearn outlined one important facet of business that underlines boxing. He noted, “So people are gonna get realistic with the draw that they are.” His position has proven to stand the test of time. One such example is the big fight of December, Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis.
