Who could forget the era of Shane Mosley? He might not have dominated the sport in his prime, but the plethora of opponents he fought positions him as a fighter of nuanced caliber. In the later years of his career, he competed against the likes of Canelo Alvarez (2012), Manny Pacquiao (2011), and Floyd Mayweather (2010). Although lost those fights, his ability to put up a great fight continues to echo to date. In the shadows of his prowess came another fighter. Streamlined to take on the legacy he left behind. He is Mosely’s son, Shane Mosley Jr.

In 2017, the senior Mosley hung his gloves after losing against David Avanesyan in 2016. But before he drew the curtains on his boxing career, his son had begun furthering the family’s name in the sport. He entered the ring in April 2014 for his first pro-fight against Mark Cordova. That night marked his first success in the ring after he won the fight. Now, years later, he’s got his fight scheduled under a very important card- Ryan Garcia vs. Oscar Duarte. He will be seen going against Joshua Conley at the Toyota Center of Houston on December 2nd. But what has been his story so far? Let’s dive in.

In Shadows of the Mosley Legacy

When he undertook his maiden fight, Mosley Jr. had some big shoes to fill. He hailed from a family that had already posited itself deep into the sport. His dad? Well, legendary Shane Mosley himself. His Granddad? Jack Mosley rose to fame not just for training his son into the notoriety of boxing but also for his quick-wit conversations with the world. In these shadows, the junior had to find his voice but also not forget his roots. To Bleacher’s Report, he once noted, “The way I approach my task is working and training very hard and learning as much as I can from my father and my grandfather.” “I don’t necessarily try to be anybody besides Shane Mosley Jr,” he added further about his yearning to make a name for himself.

It was right after his debut when he spoke about the pressures that came with being a Mosley. He had emerged as a young middleweight with a 2-1 record. The world might imagine that it is them that pressure him into doing good in the ring. But for the fighter, it is a battle within himself. He said, “I do feel pressure, but it’s the pressure I put on myself to be the best that I can possibly be.” His fight for the world championship remains in the bucket. However, his work toward it began as early as 2021. For the North American Boxing Organisation, he secured the vacant WBC title against Cristian Olivas after the latter threw in the towel. The next fight saw him lose the same title. But that night marked the onset of the trajectory that led him to the big December 2nd fight.

The Journey in the Ring

It was shortly after the pandemic-induced restrictions were being loosened and Mosely Jr. was on the hunt to make big in the ring. He had already fought 20 bouts, out of which he won 17 of them. After claiming the WBC title (NABO), he defended it against the challenge of Jason Quigley (2021), a fight that he lost through a majority decision. After a gap of about a year, he entered the ring yet again. With all the vehemence he could accumulate, he went on to fight one name after the other. After the Quigley loss, he made sure that he’d encounter no other scathes to his record.

In June this year came another opportunity for the fighter to reclaim the belt he lost two years ago. In an Ontario fight against D’Mitrius Ballard, he took back the title through a spectacular technical knockout. He planned to take control of the fight in the first round itself, but his seventh-round victory was no less a feat in itself. He remarked, “The plan was to take control of the fight from the first round, I was a control freak in there.” The groundbreaking win put him back on the maps and a big fight was on the horizon.

The Garcia-Duarte fight is touted to close the year with the pomp that it deserves. It is a fight that comes after the former lost his fight against Gervonta Davis in April this year through a very controversial knockout. Multiple fiascos post that, Garcia enters the ring now to rebuild from his career’s first loss. To witness this moment, the entire boxing realm will shift its attention toward Toyota Center on the 2nd of December. And on that card among the likes of Ohara Davies, and Pachino Hill, Mosley Jr. too, finds his place. By now he has fought 24 bouts and lost only 4 of them.

When fight night arrives, it will be to see if Junior will be able to live up to the legacy his father left in the ring. That night will decide his fate, and where he takes his career in the boxing realm from thereon.
