In a bizarre mid-air incident that unfolded and took the world by storm in 2022 on a JetBlue flight from San Francisco to Miami, boxing legend Mike Tyson found himself throwing punches, literally. The unsuspecting recipient of Tyson’s blows was none other than Melvin Townsend III, a 36-year-old individual with a rather colorful criminal history.
Townsend, the man on the receiving end of Tyson’s fists, has a rap sheet that reads like a script from a crime drama. With convictions ranging from fraud to grand theft, burglary to possession of controlled substances, and even trafficking in stolen property, Townsend has had more than a few run-ins with the law. Unsatisfied with the resolution, Mr Townsend is back with a vengeance, and this time, he is not backing down.

Melvin Townsend III’s misadventures include a 2018 break-in where he made off with a stolen trailer hitched to his pickup, landing him in hot water. The legal entanglements didn’t end there for Townsend. A drug-related offense involving oxycodone added to his criminal repertoire.

The official documents are mum on the specifics, but one thing is clear – Townsend has experienced the inside of a prison cell not once but twice. The first stint saw him behind bars for a substantial 20 months, and the second time, a 15-month sentence.

Mike Tyson engages in mid-air melee
The bizarre encounter aboard the JetBlue flight sheds light on what can only be described as a turbulent exchange between Tyson and Townsend. As the plane taxied on the runway, Townsend, seated behind Tyson, reportedly incessantly harassed the boxing legend. The tension reached its breaking point when Townsend allegedly hurled a water bottle at Tyson, triggering the champion’s explosive reaction.
Tyson, not one to back down, unleashed a barrage of punches on Townsend, resulting in a bloodied and battered scene. The altercation escalated to the point where law enforcement had to intervene upon the plane’s landing. Surprisingly, Townsend, the supposed victim, didn’t press charges against Tyson, and both left without legal consequences.
However, the tables seemed to have turned, and Townsend has had a change of heart.
Townsend’s Change of Heart: The $450,000 “Shakedown” Demand
The man who bore the brunt of Mike Tyson’s fists during a JetBlue flight is seeking $450,000, which Tyson’s attorney labels a “shakedown.” Melvin Townsend, the recipient of Tyson’s alleged assault, initiated a “pre-litigation settlement demand,” claiming injuries and damages from the incident that took place on a flight from San Francisco to Florida in April of the previous year. Townsend’s attorney, Jake Jondle, asserts that his client, described as an enthusiastic fan, was excitedly engaging with Tyson about the marijuana industry and psychedelic mushrooms before the altercation.
The demand contends that Townsend suffered severe headaches, neck pain, and ongoing effects, leading to job loss and the inability to seek immediate medical help due to lack of insurance. The proposed six-figure settlement aims to cover ongoing medical expenses, including medication, therapy, and treatment for head and neck pain, depression, and PTSD. Nonetheless, Tyson’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, rejects the demand fiercely calling it a “shakedown” letter and vowing not to part any money to settle this issue.
