Ahead of the fight against Jaime Munguia on the 4th of May, Canelo Alvarez told the media that he would only fight David Benavidez if offered $150-200 Million. According to Alvarez, Benavidez had nothing significant to offer. Therefore, the undisputed Super-Middleweight champion wanted to be generously compensated. “[Benavidez] brings nothing to the table for me. He brings just 25 pounds more on that night,” Alvarez had said.

On the other hand, David Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz claimed they had offered Alvarez $55 Million. However, Alvarez did not favor the offer. But, after Alvarez asked for a figure as huge as $200 Million, Lewkowicz told FightHype that Canelo deserved $150 Million. “Very good businessman, Canelo. And I believe that he deserves the 150,” Lewkowicz had said.

Additionally, David Benavidez took to Instagram and requested His Excellency Turki Alalshikh to “bring the biggest and most exciting fight to Saudi Arabia” by arranging Benavidez vs. Alvarez. Also, Benavidez announced he would donate his entire purse to a charity of Alalshikh’s liking if ‘Red Flag’ failed to beat Canelo in the ring.

In this context, Benavidez’s father David Benavidez Sr. now accused Canelo Alvarez of making excuses. In his opinion, Canelo is probably aware that Benavidez will beat him. “When you have excuses, I’m not saying you’re afraid. But, fighters know who you can beat and who you cannot beat. Right now with Canelo, he doesn’t want to fight David,” said Benavidez Sr.

The ridiculous amount of money that he asked for. Who’s gonna pay him $200 million? There’s no way. What does that tell you? He says David doesn’t bring anything to the table only 25 lbs on the day of the fight. How many pounds is he going to bring on the day of the fight also? But, at the end of the day, he’s only looking for excuses,” he added. Along these lines, Benavidez Sr. opened up on Benavidez’s future plans.

David Benavidez not focused on Canelo Alvarez

Speaking to FightHype, Benavidez Sr. said that they would not wait for the Canelo Alvarez fight. “We’re going up to 175 and look for another big challenge there. Trying to fight Beterbiev, Bivol, you know. Those are the monsters of that division. Bivol beat Canelo Alvarez, Zurdo Ramirez. So, we would love to fight him. And give the fans what they want,” Benavidez Sr. added.

At the end of the day, I don’t think that Canelo fight is going to happen. We’re not focused on Canelo,” he concluded. Looks like, Benavidez is more keen on winning a title at Light Heavyweight. Since Bivol and Beterbiev are likely to fight for the undisputed Light-Heavyweight title, fans can expect ‘Red Flag’ to contest for the same too. With that said, do you think Canelo is making excuses to avoid David Benavidez? Let us know in the comments below. For more boxing updates, follow EssentiallySports!
