Former super middleweight champion Laila Ali has long been an advocate for social issues following her retirement from boxing. She has taken part in many philanthropic events and is also a member of several organizations working on social issues plaguing society. Laila has followed perfectly in the footsteps of her father, Muhammad Ali, who was also an advocate for civil rights. Moreover, she is currently part of organizations like the ‘American Diabetes Association’ and ‘A Place Called Home’.

She has also taken initiative against human trafficking. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising when she stepped up to tackle another issue and even aimed to expose a multinational corporation in the process.

The former champion shared a video where a spice and seasoning brand named McCormick Spice was allegedly exposed. In the video, it was revealed that the company is currently facing a class action lawsuit over high amounts of metal being found in their products. Moreover, it was also revealed that the majority of store-brought spices were contaminated with metals which could harm the well-being of users. The video expressed its frustration towards this by asking a very necessary question. “Why is it on the shelves then?” it read.

Laila is with this cause, as she tried to spread more awareness about the issue affecting normal people. Moreover, social media has become a great tool for athletes and activists to spread awareness to people on these problems.

Why are seasoning companies under fire?

As per ClassAction.org, a consumer report conducted in November 2021, revealed that brands including McCormick spices were contaminated with toxic heavy metals linked to cancer and other diseases. Moreover, the products alleged to contain heightened amounts of toxic heavy metals include the company’s ground basil, ground ginger and ground turmeric.

The effects of these metals on the human body are well documented in studies. Therefore the high amounts of metal found in these products could cause severe and permanent health damage to consumers. It was also reported that 40 out of the 126 tested products showed exceedingly high amounts of harmful metals leading a lawsuit to be filed against these organizations.
