As Canelo Alvarez soared with his prowess tonight, the folks assembled at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, got a glimpse of a fighter who has redefined the scope of boxing. In a clash like never before, the Mexican fighter registered a unanimous decision victory against Jermell Charlo. The fight kept spectators on their feet from the moment the gong went off. While everyone knew the destiny of this matchup, it was only at the passage of 12 rounds did the predictions bore fruition.

With each jab Alvarez took at Charlo, the spectators recalled a similar fight of almost the same energy that took its course on the 29th of July. The same arena saw similar anticipation when Terence Crawford emerged victorious against Errol Spence Jr. in a welterweight championship fight. In a 9th-round knockout, Crawford registered himself as the undisputed champion of the weight class, ready to take on the entire boxing realm. When one draws parallels between the two fights, it is obvious that one would anticipate a crossover between these fighters. Charlo wished along similar lines. However, fate had different plans.

At the inception of the Charlo-Canelo fight, the boxing realm roared in excitement as it was announced that the former would go up two weight classes in order to challenge Canelo. Charlo too had plans of his own. After going up against Canelo at 168, the fighter was planning to drop down again to 147. Why? To bring his might against another fighter, ‘Bud’ Crawford. But the plan, it seems, has fallen apart after his very recent loss against Canelo. According to Crawford’s latest post, he has lately refused a matchup with Charlo.

In a series of tweets, Crawford mocked Charlo’s performance in his latest fight. He ridiculed the boxer for not putting up any sort of defense against Canelo. He even congratulated Canelo while making fun of Charlo, writing, “You made the so called lion look like a baby cub.”

In another tweet, he came down heavy at the fighter. Crawford wrote, “@TwinCharlo you went out sad. Didn’t even try to win, all you did was try to survive. You should be ashamed of yourself.” It seems ‘Bud’ isn’t holding anything back when going after Charlo. He even scoffed at a potential matchup between the two after Charlo called him out. By the looks of it, ‘Bud’ has no interest in fighting Charlo. He, at the moment, is gunning for a fight with Canelo.

Next Chapter: Canelo vs. Bud?

Ahead of the Canelo vs. Charlo fight, the WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, had hinted at a mandatory fight between Canelo and David Benavidez at 168 which has obstructed a possible Canelo vs. Bud fight. But that is not at all that stands in the way of this legendary clash. When Bud had expressed his wishes to fight the winner of tonight, Charlo had in all spirits been game for it. However, Canelo? Not so much.

In an interview, the Mexican fighter described what it would look like if he defeated Crawford. He said, “I like Spence and all the respect to him, but I knew. I think that the type of fighter that Terence Crawford is, he’s different.” He further remarked that he would not be given enough credit for his victory given the size disparity between the two adept fighters.
