Come 16th of November, Shakur Stevenson will enter the ring against Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC championship. While he prepares for his return to the boxing ring after his April victory over Shuichiro Yoshino, he has now suggested that he is willing to go against an MMA fighter.

His proposition comes in the backdrop of the crossover fight that went down between WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury and former UFC headliner, Francis Ngannou. In the 28th October fight at Boulevard Hall of Riyadh, Fury did not manage to establish his domination over his debutant opponent. Now that the fight has formed a new paradigm in the boxing realm, Stevenson too hopes to join the bandwagon.

Shakur Stevenson “would love” to fight an MMA fighter

In a conversation with TMZ Sports, the lightweight fighter threw his name in the hat to land the next big crossover fight. When asked about his take on Fury vs. Ngannou, he said, “From what I seen, like Fury was winning.” He added, “I can’t believe Tyson Fury made trade for that fight. I don’t think that. I don’t believe that he say he trained for 12 weeks… he didn’t look like he trained. He don’t look like he was throwing too many punches, how he usually throw punches.” He continued that he was a Fury fan but the latter’s performance against Ngannou was not his best.

When the interviewer asked him his opinion on MMA fighters getting into the ring with top boxers like Fury, Sugar said, “I would love the opportunity to beat up an MMA guy and show them that there’s real levels to it.” His big declaration did not just end with him saying he was ready to fight a big UFC name. He also challenged UFC Bantamweight Champion, Sean O’Malley for a fight.

With his stance made clear on fighting a UFC fame, fans came out in discussion regarding the same.

Fans Contemplate Sugar’s Challenge to MMA Fighters

It’s not been an easy run for Stevenson since his April fight. Earlier, he was chasing his mandatory fight against Devin Haney. The latter however preferred to vacate his WBC lightweight title to go up the weights and challenge Regis Prograis. After having multiple meltdowns following the collapse of the Haney fight, Sugar secured the fight against Los Santos. On this premise, a fan remained cautious about the possibility of Stevenson’s MMA challenge backfiring on him.

Another user sided with Stevenson on his argument that boxers hold the mettle to defend better than an MMA fighter. They asked MMA fighters to stay in their lanes.

Another user added to the boxer’s argument that Tyson did not train hard enough to face a hard puncher like Ngannou.

Then came a true Shakur fan, who reinstated their faith in the fighter.

For a while now, the world has only seen MMA names venture into the ring. A user asked when would a boxer enter the octagon.
