A thorough consensus exists in the boxing world about Ryan Garcia getting a mental evaluation before his next fight. While the fighter has refused to put himself through any such test, another voice, who claims to be an advocate of mental health, has joined the calls for it.
On April 20, against Devin Haney, in a New York fight, Garcia will fight his toughest challenge yet. However, in the days leading up to the fight, concerns about his mental well-being have also grown. His social media has become the epicenter of such alarming behavior. During an Instagram live session, the fighter, seemingly intoxicated, adamantly stated that he would not undergo a mental evaluation. With the mounting pressure and increased calls for an evaluation, will Ryan Garcia reconsider?

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Jamel Herring, the former WBO junior lightweight champion, explained vividly why he thinks ‘KingRy’ should undertake a mental evaluation before he fights on April 20. The Cincinnati-based fighter explained, “Man, it’s crazy man. It’s crazy like me being an advocate for PTSD and mental awareness. You know, what I’m saying. I, you know, wish the best for folks like that but you’re just playing it as a game to promote.”
He added, “I can’t get down with that but again, he can’t get mad also at the commission at the New York State of Commission, for wanting to do a mental evaluation. Like bro, you are putting crazy out there, every day. What’d you expect?”

Interestingly, just a few days ago, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman disclosed that he had been in discussions with the New York State Athletic Commission regarding the antics presented by Garcia, which have sparked an uproar on the internet. The upcoming fight is scheduled to take place in Brooklyn, under the jurisdiction of NYSAC, and would require its approval for the event to proceed. Thus, this is no longer a casual internet freakout. If Ryan Garcia wants to fight on fight night for the purse, things will have to change.

Herring picks ‘The Dream’
In the conversation, when asked to choose who he thinks would win, ‘Semper Fi’, explained, “Just look at the body of work. I’ve been in there in the gym in the past with Devin Haney. He’s sharp. Even as he’s fasting, you know, for reasons now, he was sharp and sparring yesterday when I watched him. So again, Devin does the craft and he takes the craft seriously.”
What are his suggestions for Ryan Garcia, though? He remarked, “He got to be mentally strong. You got to be mentally tough. Ryan has the tools to be a great fighter, if he wants to. You know what I mean? He’s not a bad fighter. I like Ryan as a fighter. But, mentally, we don’t know if he can get over that hump to get to the next level.”
