We often associate astronomical salaries with popular American athletes from leagues such as the NBA. What may come as a surprise but football has been hailed as the most popular sport across continents. In fact, the FIFA global viewership is much more than any NBA game. The immense popularity of soccer helps generate immense revenue through broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals. And now clubs have become increasingly willing to invest vast sums in securing talent. 

It comes as no surprise then that the top-tier soccer players command the richest salaries in any professional sport. In 2023, five soccer stars are earning more than even the highest-paid NBA player, Stephen Curry, who has a salary of $51.9 million. This unexpected shift is thanks to an influx of wealth from Saudi Arabia into professional football. Saudi has its own soccer league now and they are pumping in all the money.

SPL is shaking up the pay scale 

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema are poised to rake in a staggering €200 million each in 2023. This impressive sum represents more than three times Curry’s annual salary. Furthermore, N’Golo Kante is expected to pocket €100 million, Neymar €80 million, and Riyad Mahrez €52 million. All-surpassing Curry’s earnings for 2023.

Saudi Arabia’s new soccer league

Over recent years, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a powerful force within international football circles. This is due to their significant financial backing. Their investment in local competitions has changed both local leagues and global player wages.

The Saudi Professional League (SPL) is a new professional soccer league that was launched in 2021. Right after its launch, the league has now become the richest in the world. The Saudi government backs the league and they are offering astronomical salaries to attract top talent from around the world. The teams are allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money on player transfers and wages.
