Epic Games Cancel Fortnite World Cup 2020 and Other Tournaments To Be Held Online

The coronavirus pandemic has been raging across the globe for several months, infecting and endangering millions of lives. Lives of numerous unfortunate people have succumbed to the virus. The only way to break the chain of transmission is by practicing strict social distancing. As a result, many sporting and esports events have been canceled or postponed indefinitely. These include events like E3, TwitchCon, etc. Many esports tournaments like Dota 2 International, Apex Legends Global Series, League of Legends Championship Series, and many more have also already been canceled. Now, The Fortnite World Cup 2020 is the latest gaming competition added to the canceled events’ list.
There is a mutual feeling of disappointment across all gaming communities as the list of canceled events constantly keeps growing, even though its the best measure to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Fortnite World Cup 2020 Cancelled, Other Competitions Will Continue

Epic Games announced the development in a series of tweets. “Due to the limitations of cross-region online competition, there will not be a Fortnite World Cup in 2020,” the developer stated. Server lags and connection issues are some of the problems that can spoil a real-time online game of Fortnite when featuring many different regions. Since Epic’s biggest worldwide gaming event could not be held at a single physical location, they canceled it. No location or date for the World Cup was announced earlier, but it was reportedly scheduled for July 2020.

Epic further wrote, “We don’t know when a return to large, global, in-person events will be practical, but we’re hopeful to be able to put on some form of Fortnite World Cup in 2021.” Besides, they also mentioned all other Fortnite competitions will be hosted online for the rest of the year. These include the Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS), regular Fortnite Cash Cups, all other third-party events, and broadcasts.

Luckily for the fanbase, they will still be able to watch all the other Fortnite online tournaments live from home. They could also have many in-game events like live concerts, the launch of most awaited Chapter 2 Season 3, etc. to look forward to in the near future. The FNCS competition, which kicked off on May 2, already returned to official broadcasting.
It’s disheartening that Fortnite’s biggest event won’t be happening this year. But considering the current global scenario, it’s best that everyone stays home and stays safe. Other than the competitive scene, Fortnite has witnessed a massive resurgence of late. Thanks to the virtual Travis Scott concert and a new addition of a violence-free social mode called Party Royale.
