Amidst Rising Concerns Over $68.7 Billion Activision Blizzard Deal, Microsoft Educates the Community of Its Position Against Sony’s PlayStation

And recently, there have been developments regarding Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Surprisingly, the statements of Xbox seem to declare something related to the player base.

The Microsoft-owned company, Xbox, has been a signified and recognized console in the gaming industry. Moreover, it has been profusely famous for its controller design. Surprisingly, as 2022 kickstarted, so did Microsoft’s plans to add Activision-Blizzard, which left the whole community surprised. In January 2022, Microsoft voiced its intention to purchase Activision-Blizzard for $68.7 billion. Following this, investigations surrounded the deal. Moreover, the Competition and Markets Authority also cited its concerns regarding the deal. Above all, the deal is going through the second phase of approval for ‘in-depth’ consideration.

To further educate the community, Microsoft recently released a new website, richly dedicated to informing the public about the “Benefits of Xbox + Activision-Blizzard.” They mentioned the advantages of the acquisition for gamers, creators, and the industry as a whole.

To sum up, CMA had raised concerns over the competition getting lessened due to the acquisition deal. The regulating authority said, “The CMA is concerned that having full control over this powerful catalogue (…) could result in Microsoft harming consumers by impairing Sony’s — Microsoft’s closest gaming rival— ability to compete.

Microsoft has made the community aware of the fan base on consoles. They shared a statement with GamesIndustry.biz to educate more on the subject. They told that the PlayStation player base would be ‘significantly’ larger even if every single Call of Duty player on Sony’s console switched to Xbox.

Above all, Microsoft talked about the content that the PlayStation carried. The company put forward the fact that over 280 first and third-party exclusive titles were present on PlayStation in 2021, and it was nearly five times as many as Xbox.

Microsoft said, “In short, Sony is not vulnerable to a hypothetical foreclosure strategy, and the Referral Decision incorrectly relies on self-serving statements by Sony which significantly exaggerate the importance of Call of Duty to it and neglect to account for Sony’s clear ability to competitively respond”.

Furthermore, they said, “While Sony may not welcome increased competition, it has the ability to adapt and compete. Gamers will ultimately benefit from this increased competition and choice.”
