Video games have been recognized long as a cultural sector with the same or even more potential than movies, TV shows, or music. As a result, it was surprising that there was no category for video games at the Grammy.

However, the organizers of the 2023 edition included a new category that promotes the industry: Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. And we’ve already achieved our first winner.

Stephanie Economou, the composer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok, receives the first-ever Video Game Industry Grammy. The composer of The Dawn of Ragnarok (the expansion published in March 2022 for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla) earned this Grammy award in a gala attended by artists such as ABBA, Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Beyonce and many more.

For the first time, video games have raised their hands and declared themselves present at the Grammy. The world’s most prestigious music awards have inaugurated a category named “Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media,” in their 2023 edition.

This award “recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period,” according to The Recording Academy, the event’s organizer.

This is the first Grammy ceremony to award video games equal honors. Stephanie Economou receiving this Grammy for video games at a tradition that is already historic adds to its cultural history. For years, the industry had been looking for a category to honor video game soundtracks. This distinction represents the effect that the industry and its music had on public culture.

The composers behind “Aliens: Fireteam Elite,” “Call Of Duty: Vanguard,” “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Old World” were also nominees for this category.

Economou expressed her gratitude to everyone who pushed the Recording Academy to finally add this category to its esteemed yearly event after earning her gramophone. As she elegantly took up the gold gramophone, Economou stated, “Thank you for recognizing and validating the power of video game music.” It’s a huge victory for the industry indeed.

Economou told The City National Bank First Look Camera backstage, “I feel shocked, I am amazed and I’m really honored, especially because this is the first year that this category exists.”

Jupiter’s Legacy, The Director, Marvel 616, Step Up: Dancing, and another DLC for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Siege of Paris, are just a few of Stephanie Economou’s previous compositions.

The only thing that marred the award ceremony was when Randy Rainbow, an American comedian, and musician, read the award and fell at the game’s name. It didn’t take long for this to spark all kinds of remarks and jokes on social media.

One of the most ambitious franchise expansions ever, saw the light of day with the March 2022 release of the Assassin’s Creed installment of the tale.
