“He Doesn’t Seem Like He’s Coming to Play Nice”- Todd McFarlane Voices First Impressions on Venom in Spider-Man 2

The release date of Spider-Man 2 is just around the corner. This PlayStation 5 title has already won the hearts of fans with its gameplay trailers. The fans are calling it a Game of the Year contender from the looks of its fluid gameplay. However, one thing that fans can’t get enough of is the game’s villain, Venom. 

This classic villain is making its first appearance in the PlayStation Spider-Man’s world. The fans are excited to see the vision the Insomniac Games team had for the alien symbiote. In the meanwhile, Venom’s original artist Todd McFarlane has given his take on the artistic choices Insomniac Games made for this classic Spider-Man villain.

Todd McFarlane shares his take on Spider-Man 2’s Venom

During San Diego Comic-Con 2023, McFarlane viewed Spider-Man 2 Venom and commented on his features. He shared the first thing he looks for in every new version of Venom that comes out is their size. In Spider-Man 2, Venom being bigger than the superhero was a great thing for him. He said, “I think they did a nice job of making him feel like a monster. To me, I’m a big monster fan.”

McFarlane commended the artists for making the features of the alien symbiote bold and savage. He said, “They’re making him look kind of vicious. He doesn’t seem like he’s coming to play nice, which to me is Venom the anti-hero.”

He also roasted the version of Venom featured in the Spider-Man 3 movie. He claimed that the alien symbiote in that film never grew to the size he imagined for the character. This was a huge letdown for the artist. However, he is impressed by Venom in Spider-Man 2. 

He also shared another interesting piece of trivia regarding the creation of the character.

McFarlane shares an interesting story about the creation of Venom

When McFarlane first set off to draw Venom, he was drawing him from the perspective of a big alien monster with claws and teeth. However, the authors later revealed that Venom will be Eddie Brock. This astounded McFarlane, who joked that this was critical knowledge he might have used earlier.
