Sony Interactive Entertainment has reintroduced movies to the consoles after a two-year of discontinuing the service. The movies offered are exclusively from Sony Pictures Entertainment, the corporate cousin of PlayStation. The move was made because PlayStation noticed an increasing number of users shifting to free and subscription-based streaming video services.
The Sony Pictures core app brings in the ability to stream HDR movies at up to 80 megabits per second. Players can expect quality similar to 4K Ultra HD on the Blu-ray format, which is a significant selling point of the Sony Pictures Core app. The Sony Pictures Core app is initially going to be available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Sony has plans to premiere it in additional markets soon.
What movies does Sony Plan on releasing?
The app enhances the viewing experience for users by bringing in a large collection of movies that were enhanced for Imax. Sony Pictures Core offers a library of up to 2,000 movies from Sony Pictures, which fans can rent or purchase. Some of the interesting titles at the time of launch include Uncharted, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Equalizer, No Hard Feelings, and Bullet Train, to name a few.
