Fernando Alonso shocked the F1 world by moving from Alpine to Aston Martin for the 2023 season. The decision has been questioned by many fans, citing it as another one of his bad career moves. Although Alonso begs to differ on the same, he spoke about his ambitions with Aston Martin and how he is invested in the long term to fight for wins and championships.

Fernando Alonso, aged 41, is confident that Aston Martin can fight for race wins in the future. Speaking to BBC, he mentioned how their recent development progress is promising good potential for the future. Alonso said, “Ultimately, winning the championship is what motivates me every day, so [I am] still thinking the third [championship] will be possible one day.”

“Maybe not next year, but who knows in the future. And now, with this project of Aston Martin, there are other things appealing to me. To try to build the team – not from scratch – but after this year, they are hoping [to become] much better in the next few seasons.”

The Spaniard signed up for Aston Martin probably due to the significant investments made by Lawrence Stroll into its facilities and development. He said, “They have a lot of new people in the team, great talent, new facilities.”

The development of the AMR22 in the 2nd half of 2022, saw Aston Martin jump from 9th to 7th in the championship (almost beating Alfa for 6th). It will be intriguing to see if Aston Martin can execute the “El Plan” for Alonso.

After a strong 2022 recovery, is Fernando Alonso the perfect boost for a punchy Aston Martin?

Ever since its Force India and Racing Point days, the Silverstone squad has punched above its weight. The Aston Martin rebranding in 2021 was a promise to fight at the front of the field. Although, it hasn’t materialized, and the team’s position has worsened in the championship.

Now, despite slipping to 7th from 4th in the Constructors since 2020, Aston Martin has shown immense development in 2022. Especially since the summer break, Aston started getting a streak of points finishes. This was a welcome resurgence after their first-half struggles found the team in 9th in the standings.

If Aston Martin can continue to improve their car performance, it will fancy its chances to move up the grid in 2023. And they perhaps have a great driver in Fernando Alonso to maximize the potential of its 2023 car.

Still, they have a considerable pace gap to cover with teams like Alpine and Mclaren. Aston Martin will probably target to fight for 4th place in 2023 alongside those two teams.
