How Scuderia Ferrari Were Able to Manage Their Tires in Silverstone

The 70th Anniversary Grand Prix weekend may have been a mixed day in the office, but Ferrari are happy about one thing. To be precise, the Maranello outfit could bring out the SF1000’s potential by exploiting the Pirelli tires.

In this way, Scuderia Ferrari and Charles Leclerc left Silverstone with a fine P4 finish. While the tide indicated that teams unload their cars for the second race at Silverstone, Ferrari decided to go against the flow.

According to Motorsport.com, with vertical wings, the Prancing Horse sought more thrust to bring out the potential of the C2, C3, and C4 compounds.

Apparently, last weekend’s race showed that Ferrari figured out how to maintain the SF1000’s tire temperature. This gave them quite an advantage compared to the likes of Renault, McLaren, and Racing Point.

With Leclerc leading the charge, Ferrari have clawed their way back up to third place in the Constructors’ Championship. This is all the more encouraging, especially after a disappointing qualifying session.

How did Ferrari get past this issue?

Last season saw Charles Leclerc admit to his struggle with tire life in pursuit of pure performance. However, time and experience have taught him a valuable lesson about the fickle relationship between performance and better results.

But things aren’t so rosy on the other side of the garage, for Sebastian Vettel’s confidence has taken a serious beating. It falls on Mattina Binotto to bring back the Vettel of old because he is currently unrecognizable.

Apparently, the low aerodynamic set-up hobbled the German, and the general performance is well below expectations.

In Catalunya, Pirelli will bring out the C1, C2, and C3 compounds, which are the hardest sequence and the track does not make it any easier.

Back in winter testing,  the SF1000 was half a second behind the Mercedes. Therefore, it will be interesting to note the Prancing Horse’s progress in this regard.
