Antonio Giovinazzi recently concluded his third and last season with the Alfa Romeo/Sauber team. His exit from the team was not the most decorated one. The Swiss team announced Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou as the replacement for the Italian for 2022. Needless to say, he was critical of this move which left him seatless for the next season.

Giovinazzi hails from Martina Franca in Italy, with an impressive junior career to back him at the top. He did not get a very long stint with the team, and surely eyes a return in 2023. More recently, he reflected on his karting days and the struggles his parents went through to help his dream.

Giovinazzi hails from a middle-class background. His father used to be a representative at a transport company and his mother was a stay-at-home parent. In a recent interview with Corriere, he discussed his childhood struggles at length.

The older I grew up, the more difficult it became to realize the dream of being an F1 driver. But I believed in it, but above all dad believed in it. He made so many sacrifices for me,” said Giovinazzi.

“At the time he was a representative of a transport company. He went around many companies and before talking about his work he talked about me. ‘Do you know that I have a son who races in karts? If there was a sponsor’…”.

” (My mother was a) Housewife. We never missed anything, but we didn’t live in luxury. And then she was worried. At the age of 13, I was travelling almost alone, accompanied only by the mechanic, also from Puglia. Trains, buses, abroad by truck. It was not easy for her to accept. But he never made me weigh it. He endured so that that dream would come true,” he concluded.

Giovinazzi is going to race in the upcoming Formula E championship. He will also serve as the reserve driver for the Ferrari team in the 2022 season alongside Mick Schumacher. The Italian driver will help the Maranello team with setting up the car with simulator inputs.

However, the primary plan for Antonio Giovinazzi still remains to make a return to Formula 1 in the future.
