Do you know what’s the one thing common between all Formula 1 drivers? They all love racing, and better yet, they all just love being behind the wheel of a car. It matters less what they are driving as long as they get to race, even if it’s not real racing. We’ve seen almost every F1 driver enjoying sim racing at some point through their live streams. Max Verstappen is quite well known for his dedication to sim racing. However, Fernando Alonso is a step above everyone else in that regard.

The 42-year-old Spaniard has raced in all sorts of categories, whether it’s Off-road racing, IndyCar, Endurance racing or whatever have you. If it has 4 wheels, Fernando Alonso is always game. And according to Red Bull brand ambassador, David Coulthard, that’s what makes him one of the most desirable drivers in Formula 1.

There’s a general idea in the F1 community that once a driver has retired, he’s less likely to perform at the same level as before after a comeback. And, we have seen that many times before, even Michael Schumacher was not at his usual best when he initially came back with Mercedes in 2010. However, when Alonso retired from F1 at the end of 2018, he was even more immersed in racing in all sorts of categories before he returned with Alpine in 2021.

Let’s not forget that Alonso is turning 43 this July, but just like he has said on multiple occasions, ‘age is just a number on the passport.’ In a recent report from Motorsport, Alonso expressed his surprise at feeling at the peak of his fitness after taking all the pre-season physical tests. He even went as far as to say that he felt like he could race till he was 50. And David Coulthard does not doubt that statement one bit.

While there are rumors that have linked Alonso with Mercedes for 2025 after Lewis Hamilton decided to switch to Ferrari, the Spaniard has his own way of going about things.

Alonso makes clear that his priorities lie with Aston Martin

Fernando is in the final year of his contract with Aston Martin. And with all the rumors going on about Mercedes, he has finally opened up about his future plans. The first thing on his mind is to decide if he even wants to keep on racing in F1 beyond 2024. “When I make the decision if I want to keep racing or not for the future first and only talk that I will have at the beginning is with Aston Martin because that will be my only one priority,” Alonso told Sky Sports.

However, Alonso is also aware that he has plenty of good options for 2025. “I am aware of my situation, which is very unique. There are only three world champions on the grid… and I am probably the only one available for ’25 so I have a good position,” he added.
