The French Open is right around the corner and Daniil Medvedev is preparing for it on the clay courts of the Italian Open. The current World No. 3 is awaiting his clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas for the semi-finals. More than his skills on the court, a peculiar outfit he wore to one of his previous matches became the center of attention. As questions kept piling up over it, the former US Open winner made his future F1 dream clear.

It would be an understatement to say that Medvedev is an F1 fan. The Russian ace religiously follows the sport and last year, predicted Max Verstappen’s triumph over Lewis Hamilton 10 races before the season finale. He even expressed his shock when the two F1 titans crashed in the Italian GP in 2021.

Daniil Medvedev keeping F1 prospects open in his post-tennis retirement plans

In his third-round match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Medvedev walked in wearing a jacket that caught everyone’s attention. The sleeves sported a black and white check pattern that made it look like the finish line chequered flag. Following the game, the outfit became a talking point on social media.

“Yeah it looks a little bit like a flag, right, like a finish line [flag],” Express UK quoted Daniil as saying. “I like F1, and a lot of people sent [it to] me this week. I would say 85 percent [said it reminded them of] F1, 10 percent say basketball and five percent, maybe one or two guys, said rapper.”

When it was put to him that he should try his hand out in the music industry, he replied, “I prefer F1. What I feel like [is that] I could not be that bad at racing. Well, we’ll see after my career if I have time to do something.”

Daniil is not the only tennis star who is a big F1 follower. Roger Federer recently attended the Miami GP and revealed where his allegiance lies.

George and Roger instantly hit it off when the Briton went to watch the king of the grass play his last in the Laver Cup last year. During their conversation, the Swiss legend promised to visit him during a Grand Prix, which he kept. Rewarding him for keeping his word, Russell made special arrangements for Federer who got into the W14’s cockpit and hung out with the Mercedes crew.

Revealing his admiration for Lewis and George during the grid walk interview with Martin Brundle, Federer said, “I’m cheering for Lewis and George.”

“It’s nice to see them. We’ve come across each other several times. I last saw George at the Laver Cup when I retired, I was the host showing him around.

“It’s nice to be back here at the Hard Rock Stadium [where] I won back in 2019, incredible to be back here and to think there’s a Formula One track all the way around the stadium now. It’s wild.”

One thing is for sure, the internet would break if Medvedev got into an F1 car and fought against the likes of Hamilton and Verstappen. While the chances of that happening are next to none, a fan can dream, right?
