Looking back, Carlos Sainz said, “I was at home. I had been in touch with Mattia Binotto and Ferrari for a few months. When it was all signed and confirmed, it was 9 am. I was still in pajamas in my house and I signed the contract there, after waking up.”

Telling a very different experience, Charles Leclerc said, “For me, it was a bit of a strange story. I was at the beach with my friends and that day there was Netflix that was filming me. And Maurizio Arrivabene called me on the phone and told me, ‘okay so’. Netflix was just in front of me and I couldn’t tell them because it wasn’t official.”

Although he signed for Ferrari in 2019, 2022 was the first year Leclerc mounted a proper title challenge, even though it was only for the first half of the season. Now, the Monegasque is fighting Sergio Perez for the P2 spot in the WDC. Both drivers stand on level points.
Arguably, Leclerc could have had a few points advantage right now if he had not collided with Lando Norris in Brazil.
