2013 was a great year for German fans after Sebastian Vettel secured his 4th consecutive world title at the Buddh International Circuit. But just as the monumental year for the young German ‘Weltmeister’ drew to a close, the motorsport world would be turned upside down on its head on December 29. While skiing with the then 14-year-old Mick, the Ferrari legend, Michael Schumacher met with an accident that left him in a medically induced coma, robbing the world of witnessing one of the sport’s greatest in a mentor role. Over 10 years and a week later, the community instantly had flashbacks to that day after Fernando Alonso shared what he was up to during the winter break.

Following in the footsteps of Charles Leclerc, who had also shared his skiing shenanigans on Instagram earlier today, the Spaniard unintentionally prompted fans to point out the awful track record between racing drivers and skiing. Taking to Instagram, Fernando Alonso shared a photo of him in skiing gear with the caption, “Starting the year on a positive vibe!” while tagging the Ski & Snowboard School 2000, a well-known mountain biking and skiing school in Val Gardena, Italy.

This only comes weeks after Verstappen had joked, “Because I haven’t been skiing in like five years, hopefully, I don’t need to call the team at the start of January (to tell them) that I broke a leg. I’ll try to be careful!”. The fear that both drivers and the community have come to associate with skiing leads back to Schumacher’s tragic incident. While not much is publicly known about the seven-time champion’s condition. In 2017, the German’s manager stated that he was undergoing intensive medical care and his condition was not a public matter up for discussion. It goes to show that, despite F1 drivers being athletes unlike any other, life can be all too unpredictable.

Adding to the growing phobia surrounding the snow and prominent motorsport personalities was Ken Block’s unfortunate accident with a snowmobile. So while Verstappen and Leclerc’s skiing wishes had already scared the community, the Spaniard’s post sent them over the edge.

While Alonso could be seen smiling in his green and yellow skiing attire, that smile quickly turned into something sinister for this fan, “Skiing and f1 drivers gives me PTSD every f**king year.” On the other hand, some fans couldn’t help but wonder why the racers still went skiing after all that had happened, why is every f1 driver obsessed with skiing even after what happened 💀”

The majority of the fans relived Schumacher’s nightmare. One user commented, “Oh shit, here we go again while another shared, “No please not this 💀”. However, others tried to sway the conversation away from the dark comparisons; “It’s ok he is only 2 times world champion”.

One take at a time

My journey into the world of motorsports began when I watched the Top Gear Ayrton Senna tribute as a child. I later materialized my passion for motorsport through karting on the side. By the time I completed my undergrad in Journalism, I had extensive karting experience, with a few podium finishes to my name.
