In the ever-changing sport of Formula 1, sometimes long-lasting rules also see amendments. Another aspect that affects these rules is the decisions the race stewards need to make during the race. Not just the teams, but race officials also make split-second decisions during a race which often affects the outcome. Lando Norris was a victim of such a decision, which demoted him from P9 to P13 during the Canadian GP. The elaboration on the “unsportsmanlike conduct” resulting in a penalty garnered a furious response from Norris. However, he isn’t backed on his stand against the FIA by his team, McLaren.

The Brit was furious and called out the governing body for its inconsistency in its judgments. However, McLaren TP did not echo this feeling. In fact, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella accepted the FIA’s decision, as quoted by Motorsport-Total, and understood their need to set new standards.

“We spoke to the stewards right after the race because we felt that these types of speeds were under a safety car or even a virtual safety -Car shouldn’t be a real violation,” says Stella. “There is a possibility that the commissioners want to set a new reference. We will continue to talk to them. Ultimately we trust their judgement, but we are right now re-examining Lando’s behavior as we are very surprised that it has resulted in a penalty. If that’s the approach, then okay. But it’s a bit of a shame that we were involved in setting the new standard.”

The Brit will definitely feel betrayed by his team’s attitude towards the penalty. Such behavior, among other aspects, could be the reason he pushes for a move away before his contract expires.

The Brit is among the most talented drivers on the grid but has hardly anything to show for it. This is mainly due to the sub-par level of challenges he has been driving for far in his career. The scenario is the same in 2023 as well and looks far from improving. Because of this, F1 experts urge now-23-year-old Norris to take his talents elsewhere as soon as possible. His contract expires in 2025, but the experts’ Martin Brundle and Karun Chandhok believe he needs to fight for a change in the coming year.

“Do you think Lando should talk to Ferrari? You know, Carlos isn’t having a great time. At what point would you start to get nervous if you were Lando?” asked Chandhok. To this, Brundle responded, “In that case, you want reassurance. But yes, Lando will look after the teams around him. He has to do that but it’s up to the contracts and the [FIA] Contract Recognition Board.”
