Back in 2019, the motorsport community mourned the passing of French F2 driver, Anthoine Hubert. He was involved in a multi-car accident at the Belgian Grand Prix, and tragically lost his life. In response to the Frenchman’s death, the F1 2019 game chose to remove his character out of respect.

However, it is believed that the F1 2020 game is set to include the late Frenchman, albeit with a small twist. Anthoine Hubert’s avatar will be present in the new edition of the official Formula 1 game. Apparently, the then 22-year old is a selectable option for the ‘My team’ mode.

How did the F1 developers make Anthoine Hubert a playable character?

In the My Team managerial mode, the game offers fans the opportunity to choose Anthoine Hubert as a driver. However, when players choose the Frenchman, a special notification shows up on the player’s screen. As per F1 game director Lee Mather, the gesture is meant to be a small tribute to Hubert. He said, “As soon as you look at Anthoine Hubert when selecting drivers there will be a small notification, as a tribute”.

Furthermore, he revealed that the driver’s family gave them their blessing to add the deceased driver. Mather continued, “We took this choice very seriously and it wasn’t easy. We asked all involved parties of the driver if this was allowed, and they all agreed”.
