Age doesn’t seem to bother Fernando Alonso much as the Spaniard is still looking very much at his prime despite hitting 40 in July last year. In fact, Alonso is also the oldest driver on the Formula One grid at the moment, taking over from 42-year-old Kimi Raikkonen who quit racing by the end of 2021.

And despite that, Alonso made a sound comeback to F1 last year with Alpine, frequently securing decent finishes including a podium in Qatar. But, on top of that, who could ever forget his defensive battle against former McLaren foe Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix?

Well, now, having come from such a strong returning season, F1 commentator, Martin Brundle, has a rather bold opinion on the two-time world champion.

Brundle reckoned Alonso still has the much-needed zest to win championship titles in Formula One. And to achieve that, all Alonso needs is a Mercedes F1 seat, as his ‘old-fashioned aggression’ could guide him to more victories than ever and consequently the championship title.

As reported by Formule1.nl, Brundle acknowledged that Alonso could win his third championship title with a Mercedes in 2022. And of course, one must agree upon this claim. The prime reason being his Qatar GP podium, which he earned on merit and not entirely via favorable circumstances.

“If Fernando were driving for Mercedes, he would have the potential to become world champion,” he said.

“He still has that old-fashioned aggression. Drivers today have a good mental and physical condition, so the age barrier no longer exists. The cars are not so physically demanding anymore, with power steering and that sort of thing.”

“So they are in good shape. And they are experienced, especially with the great rule revolution. Fernando is still one of the best drivers on the field,” Brundle added.

Overall, Alonso seems happy enough to stick with Alpine for another year or two. And amidst the upcoming new era, there is no denying that Alpine could find themselves in the mix of the championship contenders, if not this year, at least in the near future. So, will the Spaniard be able to end his glorious F1 career with another championship victory?
